Dunajec, first fish in this year
New season on Dunajec started slowly. Due to cold winter, water still haven't warmed enough to make trout more bite-happy.
Air temperature was +5 C, water temperature in the river +2.8 +3 C.
Water level 193 cm, medium, but comfortable to wade. Water is clear.
I started at 10:00 near Maria Ligas hotel, at place colloquially named "u Marysi". I ran through the hole with streamers and skagit setup. No luck.
Later, I drove to another famous spot - "drugi mur" (the second wall). There was three fishermen on the wall. I decided it's too crowded, and walked to the other side of the river. I ran my streamers across the spot, nothing.... This place usually packed with fish, but it looks like they still sleeping after winter.
Next spot was first wall ("pierwszy mur") and Park Linowy. There is nice hole between park and 1st wall. That's a good spot, but many snags. I lost couple of streamers. Then I switched to nymphing rod, crossed the river to the other side of the run and worked it out with nymphs. There is very hard current, hole is deep, and you need heaviest nymph to hit the bottom. Wading on the right side of the hole at this level is difficult, and requires a wading staff or stick.
Unfortunately, there was a lot of garbage on the river bank in this place. This drives me mad.... these people are like dirty pigs :-( How they can treat such a beautiful place like that???
After short pause, I switched back to streamers. After many unsuccessful attempts I found that I'm fishing without fly at all... streamer was torn apart. I attached fresh black zonker, and on second cast the line stopped and somebody grabbed it.... Fish on! I felt it is a big, heavy trout. Fish circled in the deep water and didn't want to come to the surface. After short fight, I manage to bring it to the landing net. Wooow, what a monster! 50 cm trout, thick, big head. Beautiful fish!
Soon after that, Wojtek (Kudlacz) called me and we met on the bank. He told me he has guests from Ukraine, and suggested me to go with him and get acquainted.
We drove to his hotel, branded as "Fly fishing in Poland". I met with 3 guys from Kraków, they were students from Ukraine. We had a coffee, and nice talk.
Then I drove towards my home, and stopped to check couple of new spots.
First spot was below footbridge, downstream from "Marysia" site. There is a small inlet joining the river.
The bottom is like a boulder garden, very hard to wade. The place looked promising, but I had no strikes.
Next stop was after Tyłmanowa anc Ochotnica river inlet. It is after fly-fishing only / no kill river zone. There is a long , big island in the middle of the river. Nearest side is shallow and fast water. Far side looks more deep, but I was too lazy to walk there. Probably, it's better to access from the other side.
After last fruitless attempt, I drove to my home.
Not the best fishing day, but day spent on the river - always good day.
I think water is too cold, and that's the reason why fish was not cooperative. Let's see in the end of March.
