Czarny Dunajec, Festiwal Sztuki Łowenia
7-8 July there was fly fishing festival, organized by Polish fly fishing magazine "Sztuka łowenia na sztuczną muchę" (The art of fly fishing).
Program of the festival for 7.08 included:
-Introduction by Mirek Pieślak, chief editor of Sztuka Łowenia magazine.
-Demonstration of fishing equipment and other goods from sponsors (Loop, Scierra, Traper, Orvis, Winston, Simms, Royal Wulff, Patagonia), by fly shops salar.pl, harius.pl, flyhouse.pl. Sorry, if I forgot to mention someone else.
-Basic mechanics of fly casting, demo and detailed explanation by Igor Glinda, owner of www.tartaknadbobrem.com fly fishing center
-Casting clinic , provided by certified instructor Marek Puczyński and Igor Glinda
-Dry fly techniques and tactics, by fly fishing guide Mirek Wnuk
-Spey casting with double handed rod, by Piotr Talma (certified THCI)
-Single hand and switch rod casting demo with Skagit lines, by Robert Karlewski, organizer of "I Love DH" festivals
-Fly tying masterclass for children, by Joanna Pieślak
-Casting competition, for adults and children
I came in Friday 6.08 in the evening. I met with the guys, and went to my hotel.
The river looked not good, water was dirty and opaque, after heavy rains. Looks like coffee with milk. Despite of this, I tried fishing with colorful streamer, and caught one rainbow trout, under the weir.
7.08 early in the morning, I drove to other location. Water was even more dirty. Too sad, Czarny Dunajec was very nice river, with beautiful gravel bottom. But now it looked totally unfishable.
So, I came to the festival site , and joined the program.
Flyhouse shop brought assortment of Orvis and Winston gear.
Harius.pl shop, brought wide array of Loop rods and reels. I especially liked Loop Cross series double hand rods, and 11' 3wt Goran Anderson series, very nice nymphing rod.
In the meantime, there was fly tying lessons for kids, guided by Joanna Pieślak. They were very motivated to finish their first fly!
Then there was casting sessions. I had a "clinic" session with instructor Marek Puczyński, who noticed that I have chronic "disease" when I do my back cast. My hand moving a rod goes not in the vertical plane, but partly sideways, which occasionally can cause bad loop shape and tailing loops. It's really hard to overcome bad habits. After that, there was double handed rod casting demo by Piotr Talma, certified two handed instructor.
Late in the evening, I decided to go fishing. I asked Mirek Wnuk, where's good part of Czarny Dunajec with not so muddy water. He suggested for me to go to the upper part of the river, near Chochołow.
I drove 10 km upstream to Chochołow, and there was a huge difference. River is much smaller there, crystal clear, with many rapids, small pools, and pocketwater.
Trout was obviously hiding in these small pockets, behind rapids. I caught two first fish almost immediately. Fish is mostly small there, but Mirek told that there can be bigger specimens, too,
Most fish were caught on red tag nymph (of different sizes), and also on small nymph with green body and tail from coque de leon feather barbs.
I walked upstream, probed all pockets, which looked "fishy". In one of them, I caught grayling, also on small red tag.
I loved that river, even fish is small, the nature is so beautiful, so it's a great pleasure just to be in such place.
The conditions were good. Level at Koniowka station 151 cm, flow 4,2 m3/s.
I caught 6 brown trout and 1 grayling for couple of hours.
On the next day, 8.08 there was a fishing competition "Puchar Janosika" (Janosik cup). I opted out from it, because I planned to go to other place - to orienteering competition "Wawel Cup" in Jura Krakowsko-Częstochowska, near Zawierce. But, it was very positive experience to visit such event, travel to new place, and meet fly fishing friends.
Czarny Dunajec, do zobaczenia! Bye-bye!
