Escape from the end of the world
Everybody is talking about coronavirus, how many people died in this and that country. Mass hysteria, panic shopping, shortage of food and toilet paper.. please stop talking about this shit! The end of the world will wait, let's go fishing!
Dunajec river warmed up bit, and I decided to give it a try. Last year there was outstanding fishing for trout with streamers and nymphs.
I started at 9.30 in my favorite run, deep and wide. Ideal place for trout spey.
There was freezing temperature in the night. We had very warm beginning of March, but water cooled down from +4,5 C to +2 C. Poor conditions for trout fishing, but let's five a try.
The river at Gołkowice was 162 cm and 32,5 m3/s. Low and clear. I remember fished it at 45-50 m3/s year ago, and it was awesome.
I covered whole run 2 or 3 times with different streamers. White, brown, black. No bites.
I think because water is too cold, trout stuck to the bottom and don't move after the fly.
Let's try to reach them wich euro nymphing. It often saves fishless days.
I moved to pocketwater section, more suitable for euro nymphing. There's a lot of big boulders, and abundance of pockets and holes between them, where trout can hide from the current.
Unfortunately, there were no bites, too.
An observation from the bridge shows, how many hidden pockets in this river, unreachable by anglers. You can't wait to the middle, or maybe you can, but in very low water conditions.
In the middle of the day, I drove to upper Dunajec section in Krościenko. There's one very productive hole, which I always try, when I'm on the river.
I fished through it thorously few times with streamer. Nothing, only snagged couple of times.
Then I repeated covering water with euro nymphing.
Fish wasn't cooperative. maybe they have quarantine too?
It was time for lunch. All restaurants closed due to virus. The only places where you can buy food, are gas stations and McDonald (possibly other fast food chains like KFC too).
McD served only food through drive through window. I bought a burger and coffee, and ate in on the parking lot. There were few people doing the same. Thanks MdD for supporting us in such hard time.
I wouldn't say it was my the best fishing trip. But it's better than sit at home and watch terrible news on TV or internet.
