Hot summer in May

 It became very hot for beginning of May. The weather affects trout activity, it feeds very selectively, or barely feed at all.

Brzegi heavily owergrown by water lilies, which cover the whole shoreline, with few exceptions. 

This is bad for fishermen, because you can't pull the fish through the vegetation without snags.  

I started early morning. First I tried my favorite hopper-dropper rig. The take was so powerful, so indicator fly disappeared underwater. The fish was very strong, and bigger the average. Unfortunately, I lost it when the line snagged in the vegetation.

Later attempts didn't produce bites. Rainbow trout were slowly cruising under the surface.  I switched to small wet fly (soft hackle type), and I got first fish on it.  

Not bad start.  I've seen fish swimming slowly near me, like in aquarium. I rigged tenkara rod for fishing up close, because it's more suitable for sight fishing in the short range. With tenkara rod, you can precisely put the fly in front of the fish nose.

I've seen pretty big rainbow, and dropped fly in front of it. The fish accelerated like a rocket, and ended in the weedbed, where my line wrapped around water lilies. Shit! I lost that fish, and lost the fly too :-( It was very precious wet fly, tied by Slovak guide, and presented to me few years ago. It was killer fly for graylings on river Vah. 

Another fish was smaller and not so fast, and I landed it with tenkara rod.


The fishing was slow, many fish swam nearby but most of them rejected my offerings.  I hooked pretty big one on the fly rod and wet fly. I think it was the biggest rainbow I ever hooked on Brzegi. More than 50 cm. Unfortunately, the fish streamlined to the weed bed, snagged my rig, and got off the hook. This time, I saved the fly, but lost the fish.  


I walked around, to spot some other nice places to fish, The water was clear and you can see cruising fish, like in aquarium.


There were no other bites, 3 fish scored (2 on fly rod, 1 on tenkara), and 2 lost due to snags (1 on fly rod and 1 on tenkara).

Dunajec river is familiar to everybody who ever heard of fly fishing in Poland. Special part "OS Dunajec" near the city Krościenko nad Dunajcem is one of the top destinations, known outside of Poland. Recently, second catch and release part opened. This is 5 km long section from bridge in town Gołkowice to the weir near Stary Sącz. Unlike first "OS Dunajec", which is fly fishing only, this section also allows spin fishing. Vah - river of big fish

This weekend I spent two days in Slovak river Vah, near city Ruzomberok. Vah is the longest river in Slovakia. Catch-and-Release fishery in town Besenova is famous fly fishing destination. It's a 3 km long part of the river from Besenova lake dam to the bridge in village Ivachnova.  There are few accomodations near the river, including hotels and private apartments. I booked a small hotel in Ruzomberok, 8 km from fishing site. Early in the morning, I arrived to the license shop in Ivachnova. It opens at 7.00 in summer time. I met there Czech and Polish anglers, also waiting for license.  Vah is quite popular destination for foreigners from nearest countries. I bought licenses for 2 days (20 euro per day), and started in the middle of the C&R part, where the road follows right bank. Chasing Norwegian salmon in Mandalselva. Part 1

I was dreaming about fishing in Norway almost a year, since I read about Mandal river in the blog of fellow German fly fisherman. I meticulously gathered all information about this river and the area: weather reports, fishing reports from previous years, river flow measurements, maps and locations of the pools and fishing beats. Everything needed I found in the Internet and from fellow fishermen, who already was of this river. Most of information was in Norwegian, Danish or German languages which I don't understand, but I used Google translator.  The most comprehensive source is afiskeri.eu , site maintained by Danish fisherman Michael Aasgard Olsen. Michael wrote almost encyclopedia about Mandal river, with maps, photos, video clips and descriptions of the beats.
