Byske river, Sweden. Part 1. Fällfors camping
In June 2016 I planned a trip to the north of Sweden, to river Byske. It's popular river holding decent Atlantic salmon population. Also, the river area is quite wild and remote, for most of it's course the river run through forested area with scarce population.
Due to recent discussion on Byskeälven fishing community, I decided to make a sort of contribution to virtual Byske river guide. Byske lacks information in English on the Internet, regarding fishing sites description, accomodaton, location of facilities, etc.
I would not share where to catch salmon 100%, as there is no such place :-) and i'm not an expert in this. If you need more specific fishing tips, it's better to hire a guide. But i'll share some travel tips, which can be helpful for newcomers during planning the trip.
It it possible to get to Byske by car (if you are lucky to live in Sweden or Finland), or by plane. Closest airports to Byske are Skellefteå (80 km) and Luleå (90 km). Both airports have car rental offices. Car is a must, because numerous fishing sites are distributed along the river to 30-50 km distance, and if you have no luck in some place (or it is crowded so there is no space to cast between anglers :-) ), it make sense to change location.
Byske river divided to zones by fishing regulating authority (FVO). There are 5 zones, 1 to 5, number one starts from river mouth in Byske town, and number 5 is the most remote from city, and large.
The whole stretch of the river, managed by FVO, spans almost to 100 km.
But, if you stay in Byske town, it is possible to fish only in Zone 1 without transportation. It is small part of the river, and can be covered by feet.
Fällfors Camping located in the town of Fällfors , in the middle of Zone 4.
Camping is really nice, and I highly recommend. Anneli Danielsson, camp hostess and co-owner, very nice and helpful person. We communicated long ago before this trip, when I was in search of the information. She also speaks very good English. Camping is self-catering style - you can use common kitchen, cooking utilities, toilets, showers, free wi-fi. Showers are coin-operated, 5 sek for one usage. In the cabin was refrigerator, heater, small set of plates and cutlery. You can get more dishware in common kitchen, if needed. You can also order a breakfast for extra money (60 sek).
Daily fishing license costs 250 sek and valid for 24 hours , starting from the time you choose during the purchace. Licenses are sold in numerous places - in Byske sports store in city center, in Fällfors camping and some other sites along the river. License sellers have blue sign "Fiskekort" in front of the building. Unlike other countries or places, there is no price difference between prime and off-peak season, and between Swedish anglers and foreigners.
On the northern fish ladder, there is Laxobservatoriet (salmon observatory) - one side of the fish ladder has glass wall, and people can watch fish like in aquarium. Salmon in Byske river is quite big (common size is 80-100 cm and some specimens are up to 126), so it's kind of thrilling experience to see such a big fish beside the glass.
The short stretch under the bridge (between rapids near camping and upper part of waterfall, where river turns to roaring whitewater) suitable for fishing from both banks. It looks like good holding water.
There were white nights at the time, and it was possible to fish the whole night.
Here is a fly I prepared for this trip. It's featherwing variation of popular Swedish fly "den vanlige" (the usual one).
