Spawning grounds of Upper Raba
Raba is number one choice for trout fishermen living in Kraków, because it's nearest river to the city with good population of brown trout, rainbow trout and grayling.
I fished it many times with variable success. Fishing can be very good in summer and autumn, but usually slow in early spring, because of cold water.
River level was 231 cm in Dobczyce, flow 5,9 m3/s. This is very low level. I feel uncomfortable at low level (and fish probably too), especially on sunny days, when bottom looks like "naked" and fish cannot hide from predators. In such conditions trout concentrate in deepest holes, where it's harder to convince them to bite a fly.
First fish I got soon, as I started in 7:00 in the morning. It was biggest brown trout of the day, nearly 40 cm. Fish was in good condition, and made few spectacular jumps, until it came to rest in my net.
I got it on grey scud nymph with orange accent., tied on Dohiku HDJ No. 10
Next fish I got only after two hours of Czech nymphing in another hole. It was smaller trout, and it took on small red tag nymph, which was tied to the dropper.
Two fish in 3 hours, that's not what I expected. So I decided to search for another place.
There's special section of Raba river, upstream from city Myślenice. It's called in Polish "Tarlisko górnej Raby", or Spawning grounds of Upper Raba.
I drove 20 km upstream along Raba course from Dobczyce to small town Pcim.
There's small tributary river Krzczonówka joining Raba. It looks nice, but not very suitable for fishing , because of extremely low water level. Raba level at Stróża was 38 cm, flow 4,6 m3/s.
I walked by forest trail, and found Raba. It was very clear, low, and I think water temperature was higher than near Dobczyce. I think it was 6,5 C or even 7 C. At least, my private parts weren't freezing.
This part of Raba is important spawning ground for brown trout. There's a lot of shallow water, and thousands of trout fry and juvenile fish. I don't know how many of them will survive, but looks like a good prognosis for the river.
There's not so much places suitable as fish holding water, because of low water conditions. Hardy you will find adult trout of normal size in ankle-deep water. So I walked along the river, in search of deepest spots.
I found one small piece of holding water, and got a fish. Almost immediately, on second or third cast.
Not big, but good fighter and jumper.
I walked along, and probed all places , which looked like holding water. No bites.
There's interesting place, where river washed few parallel gravel bars. Looks very fascinating.
Here, under that rapids, I got a fish but lost it.
I returned to the small pocketwater pool in the head of the run. Another cast, and I got a fish. Ohhh, it's gone.
After another attempt, I got very bright colored trout. It has red dots on adipose fin, and red marks on the edges of caudal fin. Quite rare coloration. It's called "pstrąg rasy myslienickej" or trout of Myślenice strain. This is local variation of brown trout , native to upper Raba river .
After that, I got second fish, and then another one. Three landed, two lost. Five fish in very small hole. That's a fantastic.
Interesting is that they all took small olive nymph with peacock quill wraps.
In such river, fish usually hangs in pocketwater, deeper holes, immediately under rapids, or under broken surface.
It was very hot day (+23 +25 C), so it was a bit exhausting to stay whole day in bright sun. I quit fishing near 14:00. Result was not so bad for small river.
This is my lucky "Nymph of the day"
Tail: cock de leon
Body: olive dubbing, peacock quill wraps
Collar: grey dubbing
