Vah season closure

 Trout season on Vah closed in the last day of September. So I tried to catch the last train.

The river level at Besenova was 53 cm and temperature 15 C. It looks like ideal water level. 

I arrived at 7:00 and bought a license in the Korchma Ivachnova. In this trip, I took my new rod Ego Competitor 10'/2wt (really it is 3 wt). I assembled two my euro nymphing rods to compare them.


First location is deep pool near the town hall. The main current goes along the bank, and this spot is quite long and deep. 2 years ago, I caught there 8 rainbows in one hour or so. 

But this time, there were no strikes. I tried different nymphs. In 30 minutes or so, I got a nice rainbow. The fish was strong, and jumped few times. I allowed it to play a bit and calm down, then grabbed in the net.


 The bite was on small "raczki" (cryfish) nymph on hook size 18 and 2,5mm bead. Raczek(Crayfish) is an original Polish style of nymphs. It does not imitate crayfish, and the size is usually small. But, it resembles segmented crayfish body, due to specific tying technique. 

What a beauty. So colourful. Let it go.


I fished pool near the bridge (town hall) for 2 hours from both sides. Nothing. 

Then I moved to the "Pharmacy" pool.  From my previous trips I know that there's always fish, and I always caught something decent in it. One of the fish caught there was my PB grayling 45 cm.

The location is very nice, with overhanging tree branches. Treeline creates shade from the sun, so this pool is the most comfortable to fish in bright sun conditions.


I returned to the car and had a nice talk with Slovak fisherman. I complained that fish don't bite today. He shown me his biggest brown trout caught on the fly, 70 cm or so, in his phone photos.

My waders are leaking, so I turned them inside out, and decided to take a break. I drove to the restaurant Koliba Besenovka , and ordered a dinner. 

After dinner, I fished pool near the bridge in Besenova, using streamer. Nothing.

Then I continued to fish with nymphs, on the island, which is 500-700 m downstream from the restaurant. I love that location. There's some nice holes around the island, and a lot of grass covering the bottom. It looks very beautiful.


Here I also had nothing. I talked with few other fishermen on the river, they had the same problem. Fish don't bite. Previous reports from this river few days ago were successful. Maybe fish took vacation, starting from today.   I will not fish Vah anymore in this year due to season closure, except Jambor stretch maybe. Unlike most of trout streams in Liptov region, Jambor is considered a "grayling" stretch, and it's allowed to fish till the end of December.

Special part "OS Dunajec" near the city Krościenko nad Dunajcem is one of the top destinations, known outside of Poland. Recently, second catch and release part opened. Vah - river of big fish

This weekend I spent two days in Slovak river Vah, near city Ruzomberok. Vah is the longest river in Slovakia. Catch-and-Release fishery in town Besenova is famous fly fishing destination. It's a 3 km long part of the river from Besenova lake dam to the bridge in village Ivachnova.  There are few accomodations near the river, including hotels and private apartments. I booked a small hotel in Ruzomberok, 8 km from fishing site. Early in the morning, I arrived to the license shop in Ivachnova. It opens at 7.00 in summer time. I met there Czech and Polish anglers, also waiting for license.  Vah is quite popular destination for foreigners from nearest countries. I bought licenses for 2 days (20 euro per day), and started in the middle of the C&R part, where the road follows right bank. Chasing Norwegian salmon in Mandalselva. Part 1

I was dreaming about fishing in Norway almost a year, since I read about Mandal river in the blog of fellow German fly fisherman. I meticulously gathered all information about this river and the area: weather reports, fishing reports from previous years, river flow measurements, maps and locations of the pools and fishing beats. Everything needed I found in the Internet and from fellow fishermen, who already was of this river. Most of information was in Norwegian, Danish or German languages which I don't understand, but I used Google translator.  The most comprehensive source is afiskeri.eu , site maintained by Danish fisherman Michael Aasgard Olsen. Michael wrote almost encyclopedia about Mandal river, with maps, photos, video clips and descriptions of the beats.
