Latte sucks
On Sunday, I headed to Skawa with intention to catch something on dry fly. Unfortunately, water condition was not promising. I do love cafe latte. But not fishing in the water like latte.
The level was 143 cm, flow 19,3 m3/s. Quite a lot for September, such flow is usually in Spring, when snow is melting in the mountains. With river flow altered by dam, you never know what fishing will be .
Once I arrived to the river, I checked other fishermen, what they doing. One was playing a nice big trout. That was a good sign. Fish is taking, despite of turbid water. Also, the weather was sunny, which means fish will se fly better in the water column.
I assembled my euro nymphing rig, and started fishing. Soon, I got my first fish - average brown trout. That was a good start. I caught it on my new fancy nymph - red tag, with grey body and burgundy metallic bead on the hol Dohiku HDJ No. 10. I made that nymphs just yesterday.
Then, 2 hours passed. Nothing. No takes. I tried different locations without success. First fish was also the last? i need to try more options.
I headed up and downstream from my start location. Tried everything popular - red tag, green tag, parkinson pink and dark red, scuds, small nymphs, tiny micronymphs. They all didnt work .
The daylight started to fade. The river surrounding tinted with warmer, yellowish colours. Maybe fish will be more active in the evening?
I was about to leave the river and go home. But decided to make the last run through the deep hole, where I started and caught first fish. I attached pink parkinson as anchor fly, and tiny micronymph on size 20 hook on the dropper. Maybe they feed on something very small?
In the meantime, small midges started to hatch. I was looking for rising fish around, but there was no surface activity. Only once, I saw big rainbow trout shown his back just in front of me. I made few casts to that spot, and it ended with snag and losing both nymphs.
While I was thinking, why fishing sucks so much today , I got a strike. Yes, fish! Rainbow trout. Not a big one, but never the less.
That trout has quite interesting body shape - short, but stout body.
I countined in the same location, with the same setup. In a 5 minutes or so , I got second fish. Nice! It's getting more interesting. This trout was more active, and made few spectacular jumps, before I netted it.
This was the last fish for today. I tried until my eyes didn't see line, but there were no more bites.
After I stopped fishing, I dressed up in my running clothes, and ran 5 km along the river. It was already dark at that time, so I took head torch with me.
Today was not the best fishing on Skawa. But, I enjoyed the weather, and nice surroundings.
