Evening on Raba

I didn't plan fishing on Sunday, because I decided to spend it with my daughter in the park.
But, in the evening, my wife replaced me on parent duty. The day was very hot for May, +21 C.
When day temperature dropped a bit, at 17:00, I drove to the nearest spot on Raba river (30 km from my home).

When I parked my car, I saw other fisherman casting to "my" favorite hole. I walked downstream to another spot. There are deep and fast run after shallow riffle. Fishing access only from the right bank. I tried to cast sinking head with streamers, but no luck. Water was a bit high, but clear. Temperature +9 C.

After some spey casting excercises with switch rod, I walked upstream to my favorite hole, under highway bridge.  River was higher than usual  (270 cm against "normal" level 250 cm), and the whole left bank with grass was flooded. Quite unusual to stay in the water, where always was bank.
But it's even better for fishing. It allows me to stay farther from the holding water, and less spook fish.

I started upstream from hole with streamer and sinking line. No takes. I attached squirmy worm nymph, and tried to jig vertically, in deep spot near the bank. Fish!  Good fish! It's pulled hard, but unfortunately came off shortly. I decided to change my gear, and set up line for short nymphing. Bottom fly - already mentioned squirmy worm, top fly - green scud imitation.

After few casts in the same place, I got fish. Healthy, strong trout, it felt heavy against current. Fish made couple of jumps, and happily landed in my net. After quick photo, I released it to the shallow water. My trout ran like a rocket to the deep hole. Thanks for the entertainment!

My mood was much better. One fish made this day. So I continued with nymphing. There was another pull, but I lost it.  I tried more till sunset, but river was silent.

When I decided to finish and crossed river to get into my car, I saw quite big fish splashed in the middle of the river. Nice jump!  But , when I tried to cast for that fish, my fly landed on the tree and I lost it.  It means that's enough, time to go home.  Thanks, Raba, for wonderful time!
