Chubs in Slovak river Vah
I planned short vacation in Slovakia. Two days I spent hiking in the mountains. One day I devoted to fishing on river Vah. Conditions were perfect - 46 cm at Besenova and 16,6 C temperature.
First, I started at Besenova stretch. This river is famous for big rainbows. So I expected to catch few of them, especially on dry fly. There was almost no takes on nymph. Only two small fish.
I moved to Hotel Summit bridge. There I spotted one decent rainbow trout, just under the bank. It was eating small insects from surface. I tried to approach it with dry fly. Fish was very close to the bank, and in shallow water. I positioned myself, so fish don't see me. I made few casts, without reaction. Fish was still there, but I wasn't sure where exactly.
I returned to the bridge and spotted this fish again. It moved a bit farther upstream. Probably disturbed by my casts. I changed my position to upstream from fish. I cast my fly few times downstream. Once fish struck it, but missed. There was no more reaction, probably fish scared and moved away.
After lunch, I moved to different river part - Jambor weir. There's big plunge pool under the weir.
Here you can spot many different fish. Barbel, chub, nase, perch, rainbow trout, brown trout, who knows else. I particularly wanted to catch big barbel.
Couple of time, fish hit my fly, but come off the hook shortly. I don't know what it was.
But, after long attempts, I got nice 44 cm chub. Big and fat, with wide forehead and golden-tinted body.
It took nymph, imitating midge larva (bloodworm).
Chubs are abundant in this hole. But mostly, they are very picky. They swimming slowly, and ignoring most of the offerings.
Another one I took on very small olive nymph.
One more on micronymph. This was smaller one, but also with big fat head.
Small brown trout also joined the company. Very colorful specimen.
This part of the river usually crowded. But today atmosphere was relaxing. Only two or three fishermen on the river.
In the evening fishing became slower. I expected to catch some rainbows on dry fly. They were rarely raising. But not into my fly.
I got only one rainbow , but on nymph. And one more came off the hook in fast water.
7 or 8 fish for the whole day in the river full of fish - not the best result. But these chubs pleased my heart.
I hope Vah will be better in September or October. In this river, late season always gives me the best results.
