Small streams of Roztocze, part 1

Roztocze is hilly area in eastern part of Poland, near the border with Ukraine. It characterised by many small streams and rivers. Main rivers are Wieprz, Por, Tanew, Szum.
I dreamed to visit this area quite ago. But it is quite far from Kraków, about 280 km or 3 hours to drive. At this time I was in the city Rzeszów, which is in 130-140 km from Roztocze area.
So I decided to give it a try.

First river I visited was Wieprz. It is typical lowland headwater stream, originating in the forests and hills of Roztocze.  Water was very low at this time. Level 47 cm at Michałów, and flow 2,3 m3/s.

First I came to one of the bridges, to check how the water looks like.

Water was so clear and shallow. Mostly between ankle-deep and knee-deep. When I walked over the bridge, I've seen many fish running away upstream. Ooops, that's a big challenge! If fish is so spooky, it will be very hard to catch them in the river like this.

The bottom is mostly sandy, with patches of gravel, which looks darker. I heard advise, that in streams like this, I should search for trout over the black bottom. They are too vulnerable in light sandy areas.

I waded through this shallow stretch. There was no chance to catch fish, they are too spooky, even afraid of false casts.
Fortunately, I found a waist-deep hole with sandy bottom and back eddie.  I don't see bottom , which means fish also don't see me.

I rigged euro nymphing rod, with pink-headed brown nymph at the bottom.  Olive micronymph on hook size 18 on the dropper.
After couple of small brown trout, I got this nice grayling.

What a unusual humpy grayling. Either it is genetical disease, or consequence of spine damage by electrofishing.

I also spooked similar grayling, just under grassy bank. In shallow places, fish often stays in the shadows, near the stream edge. Here, for example, on the right side, in shaded area.

Also, I caught numerous small trouts and graylings.

This brown was bigger then average, and jumped few times.

Trout often stays in places like this, near the bank, and in deeper portions of water between the grass.
I caught couple on dry fly (adult caddis imitation).

Many vegetation creates excellent cover for fish.

More graylings, and roach tasted my micronymphs.

Roaches live in deeper and slower pools. I caught many of them.

They are cute little fish, with bright orange fins and eyes.

Trout mostly concentrated in fast water sections, where is some cover or structure, breaking the current.

They are here, hiding under broken surface.

Guess, where trout can be?  Between these obstacles.

Cast upstream between these snags, and one more nice brownee.

Good places also remains of old watermill. There's deep plunge pool under it, also full of trouts.

Graylings also common in this stream.

Despite of it's size, stream is  abundant with fish. Mostly they are small, apart few 30cm graylings and brown trout.  But, I got big pleasure to spend time on that river.

I'll look forward to another possibility to visit Roztocze. These streams deeply touched my heart.
